GENERAL INFORMATION:Bordetella bronchiseptica is a small, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium of the genus Bordetella. It has a very close evolutionary relationship with Bordetella pertussis, although B. bronchiseptica does not produce the pertussis toxin. This pathogen typically infects the respiratory tract of mammals such as pigs, cats, dogs, and rabbits, but human infection is also possible, especially in immunosuppressed individuals. B. bronchiseptica can be found worldwide. Transmission occurs through inhalation of infected animal droplets and the incubation period is 3-10 days, but the infected animal can shed the bacteria for 3-4 months after apparent recovery.
