GENERAL INFORMATION:Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasitic cestode (tapeworm) belonging to the family Taeniidae, and it is characterised by a small, segmented, flat body. Its life cycle involves wild or domestic canids as the definitive hosts, small rodents as the intermediate hosts and humans as the accidental hosts. This organism causes alveolar echinococcosis, a severe zoonotic disease characterised by tumour-like infiltrative growth of larval cysts, primarily in the liver, which resembles hepatic malignancy.Clinical manifestations include abdominal pain, jaundice, and hepatomegaly. Transmission occurs through the ingestion of eggs excreted in the faeces of infected canids that contaminate food, water or the environment. Echinococcus multilocularis is predominantly found in the Northern Hemisphere, including Central and Eastern Europe, parts of Asia and North America.
