GENERAL INFORMATION:Enterococcus is a genus comprised of non-motile, gram-positive, catalase-negative coccoid bacteria that appear singly, in pairs, or in short chains on stained smears. Enterococcus cecorum was initially identified as a harmless commensal of the gastrointestinal tract of chickens, but pathogenic strains have emerged over the past 15 years, causing locomotor disorders in infected poultry. Affected birds may experience paralysis, particularly due to spinal cord compression. In laying hens, there is often a decrease in egg production, and overall reproductive performance may be compromised. The infection has been linked to increased mortality rates in affected flocks and young birds may exhibit poor growth and impaired weight gain. This bacterium is known to affect avian species globally and it is transmitted via the oral or aerosol route, as well as from skin wounds.
