GENERAL INFORMATION:Escherichia coli bacteria typically reside in the intestines of humans and animals. Most E. coli strains are harmless and play an essential role in maintaining a healthy human intestinal tract. However, some strains are pathogenic, meaning they can cause illness, including diarrhoea or infections outside the intestinal tract. The types of E. coli that can cause diarrhoea may be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or via contact with infected animals or humans. The most commonly observed fimbriae on enterotoxigenic E. coli isolated from calves with diarroea present the virulence gene K99, which encodes fimbria F5.
