GENERAL INFORMATION:Escherichia coli bacteria typically reside in the intestines of humans and animals. Most E. coli strains are harmless and play an essential role in maintaining a healthy human intestinal tract. However, some strains are pathogenic, meaning they can cause illness, including diarrhoea or infections outside the intestinal tract. The types of E. coli that can cause diarrhoea may be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or via contact with infected animals or humans. Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains constitute a serious and emerging clinical problem, as they cause a variety of infections, including septicemia, and are usually highly antibiotic resistant. One critical factor for the development of septicemia is the increased serum survival (iss) gene, which is highly correlated with complement resistance and lethality.
