GENERAL INFORMATION:Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium. Is usually harmless and constitutes an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract. However, some strains can cause diseases. Pathogenic strains of E. coli are transmitted through ingestion of contaminated water or food, and through contact with infected animals or people. The toxicity of these strains is caused by the ability of this species to produce toxins. One of these toxins is the Heat-stable toxin A, which is secreted into the periplasm and undergoes several biochemical processes until the mature toxin binds to a protein receptor on the surface of epithelial cells causing diarrhoea. This toxin can be subdivided in two subtypes porcine and human Heat-stable toxin A. While porcine subtype is widely found in porcine, bovine, and human ETEC (Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli) strains, the human subtype is only produced by human strains.
