Infection causes proventricular dilatation disease, an illness characterised by inflammation of the intestinal nervous ganglia and variable concurrent encephalitis and myelitis. The clinical outcome varies from inapparent to fatal neuropathic disease. Horses, sheep, cattle, rodents, reptiles, and humans are also natural hosts. This virus can cause classical Borna disease in horse and sheep.
