GENERAL INFORMATION:Rothia is a genus formed by Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile bacterial species. They inhabit the human oral cavity and respiratory tract, being part of the normal microbiome. Rothia mucilaginosa (formerly Stomatococcus mucilaginosus) is a pathogen capable of causing oral, cutaneous and central nervous system infections mainly in immunocompromised hosts. Infection in immunocompetent patients has also been reported. Rothia dentocariosa is found more abundantly in healthy oral cavities, nevertheless, it can cause endocarditis in individuals suffering valve disorders. Rothia aeria is a rare cause of human infections, and the risk factors aren’t well defined due to its rarity.
